The road trip from Perth to Esperance via Wave Rock is one of those journeys in WA that’s truly unforgettable. It’s packed with stunning landscapes, more beaches than you can shake a stick at, and, of course, the world-famous Esperance, arguably one of the most beautiful places in the whole of Australia! I’ve been lucky enough to do this road trip a few times now, and each time I discover something different – whether that be a new cute beachfront cafe or a whole new museum! Oh, and the views from your window as you cruise along the coastal stretches of this route are second-to-none. This 7-day Perth to Esperance road trip itinerary is designed to help you make the most of your journey, and comes from my multiple times driving this route. Of course, if you have a few extra days to complete the trip you’ll be grateful because you’ll be able to take your time more, but overall 7 days feels like the right amount.

Overview for Your Drive from Perth to Esperance

Before we hit the road, here are some essential details for your Perth to Esperance road trip:

  • Perth to Esperance drive time via inland route: 7 hours 45 minutes (720 km)
  • Total Time Needed: 7 days to fully enjoy the trip, including sightseeing and relaxation
  • Best Time to Go: Spring for wildflowers, summer for beach-hopping, autumn for mild weather, and winter for whale watching (but be warned, it’ll be absolutely freezing down south!)

Day 1: Perth to Wave Rock (340 km, 4 hours)

Start Your Perth to Esperance Road Trip

On day one, we’re going to cover half of the distance to Esperance so that you can get the two days of long drives done and dusted early on. Depart from Perth early in the morning, driving southeast until you hit Wave Rock.

Pit Stop in York: Discover its Historic Charm

On your way, make a pit stop in York, WA’s oldest inland town, which was first settled by Europeans in the 1830s. Whilst here, wander through its charming streets lined with historic buildings, visit the York Motor Museum, and grab a coffee at a local café.  There’s not a whole lot to do in York, but there’s definitely enough to keep you busy for a few hours. This town feels like a step back in time, with beautifully preserved architecture and a welcoming vibe. York is part of the beautiful and diverse South West region of Western Australia, making it a must-visit location for travelers exploring the area between Perth and Esperance.

Explore the Natural Wonders of Wave Rock

Next up: Wave Rock! This iconic natural rock formation, shaped like a massive wave, is around 14 metres tall, located near the town of Hyden. It’s one of the top Instagram spots in WA and was formed over millions of years by the gradual erosion of the softer rock beneath the upper edge. It’s such a cool sight! Whilst you’re here, don’t miss nearby attractions like Hippo’s Yawn, a rock formation that looks like a yawning hippo.  Spend the night in Hyden to rest up for the next day’s adventures and, as the sun sets, take a walk to check out the serene, star-filled sky. You don’t see that in Perth!

Day 2: Wave Rock to Esperance (380 km, 4 hours)

Journey Through the Wheatbelt

It’s day two, and time to hit the road! Continue your drive from Wave Rock through the Wheatbelt region, checking out the quaint towns and vast farmlands whizzing past your window.  The fields stretch out endlessly, and, if you’re lucky and visiting during the right season, they’ll be dotted with wildflowers. I won’t blame you if you pull over to take photos a few times!

Arrival at Your Destination: Esperance

And you’ve finally arrived at the star destination: Esperance! Check into your accommodation and spend the afternoon getting to know the town, maybe checking out a beach or two if you have the time. A sunset walk along the Esplanade and the Tanker Jetty is a must-do, and will have you falling head-over-heels for Esperance already.  Bistro Louis is the top restaurant in the area, with a French-inspired menu that gets rave reviews. If that’s not your thing, Siam Thai is a casual restaurant that’s always busy.

Day 3: Explore Esperance

Pristine Shores of Esperance

Start your day at Lucky Bay, one of those unmissable Esperance sights where you can meet the friendly kangaroos lounging on the beach! The white sands and turquoise waters here are absolutely out of this world, and you’ll probably end up taking a billion photos.  Next, head to Twilight Beach, famous for its smooth granite rocks and even more neon blue waters. This beach is better for taking a relaxing swim or rolling out your towel and soaking up some sun. These are two of the most beautiful beaches in Western Australia!

Blue Haven Beach is another one of the incredible beaches in Esperance, complementing the list of other beautiful beaches in the area.

Cape Le Grand National Park

In the afternoon, explore Cape Le Grand National Park. Hike up Frenchman Peak for panoramic views, swim in the oh-so-clear waters of Hellfire Bay, and check out the famous Esperance Pink Lake which has waters the colour of bubblegum!

Day 4: Esperance to Albany (580 km, 6 hours)

Scenic Drive Along the South Coast

It’s time to say bye-bye to Esperance, but we have plenty more fabulous stops still to come! This morning, head west along the South Coast Highway towards Albany.

Stop: Fitzgerald River National Park

Make a detour into Fitzgerald River National Park. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a haven for wildflowers, native animals, and rugged coastlines – so in simple terms: it’s stunning! Enjoy a short hike or a picnic, or maybe even make a few brief beach stops before returning to the road.

Reach Your Destination: Albany

Arrive in Albany, a historic port town that’s home to one of WA’s top museums. But no spoilers: that’s all for tomorrow. For now, check into your accommodation and take in the town over an evening walk.

Day 5: Albany and Beyond

National ANZAC Centre

Start your day with a visit to the National ANZAC Centre – that’s the museum I was hyping up. This interactive museum provides an emotional and educational insight into Australia’s military history and the ANZAC spirit.  The exhibits are really moving, offering a deep dive into the personal stories of the soldiers. Buy your tickets here!

The Gap and Natural Bridge

Next up, drive over to the Gap and Natural Bridge in Torndirrup National Park. Stand on the viewing platform over a 24-metre drop to the sea and gasp at the powerful waves crashing against the cliffs. The sheer force of the sea here is both awe-inspiring and terrifying!

Continue to Denmark

After exploring Albany, drive over to the delightful town of Denmark, making sure to stop at William Bay National Park. You can’t leave Denmark without visiting Greens Pool, a lovely swimming spot shielded by massive granite boulders, and Elephant Rocks, where the rocks resemble a herd of elephants wading in the water.  Denmark really is one of the most naturally stunning parts of WA, and if you have an extra day, I recommend tagging it on here.

Day 6: Denmark to Margaret River (320 km, 3.5 hours)

Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk

On your way to Margaret River today, stop at the Valley of the Giants, a forest of massive trees. Here, you can walk among the treetops on a suspended walkway 40 metres above the ground for a unique view of the ancient karri trees. The walkway sways gently, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the forest floor below.

Arrival in Margaret River

After the Valley of the Giants, arrive in Margaret River, famous for its world-class wineries. Spend the afternoon visiting some of the many local wineries (you can even join a bus tour for the afternoon so you don’t need to worry about driving). Voyager Estate and Arimia are some of my favourite wineries. There are also some epic beaches in Margaret River which attract world-class surfers. Head over to Surfers Point to watch the pros in action, and then grab a locally-brewed beer or two at Margaret River Brewhouse.

Day 7: Margaret River to Perth (270 km, 3 hours)

Surfing and Caves

Kick off your last day checking out some of Margaret River’s fabulous caves. Lake Cave and Ngilgi Cave are my top recommendations, but there are loads to choose from. The surreal stalactites and crystal-clear water here are mind-blowing, and the cave tours are informative, guiding you through the underground sections and explaining the geological history.

Return to Perth

After the caves, it’s time to return to Perth. If you have time, consider a final stop in Busselton to walk along the iconic Busselton Jetty or take a ride on the solar-powered Jetty Train. The jetty extends 1.8 kilometres into the ocean, offering knockout views and a unique underwater observatory.

My Top Tips for Your Perth to Esperance Road Trip Itinerary

  • Wildlife caution: Keep an eye out for kangaroos, especially at dawn and dusk. They’re cute but unpredictable and love nothing more than to hop onto the road. If you see one, slow down and be ready to stop.
  • Pack for all weather: Weather in Western Australia can be quite fickle, with coastal areas being cool and breezy while inland regions can get quite hot. Bring layers you can easily add or remove. Even summer mornings and evenings can be chilly, and winter can be downright cold, especially inland.
  • Fuel up frequently: Make sure your tank is full whenever possible, especially before heading into remote areas. Petrol stations can be scarce and sometimes closed. It’s better to fill up often than risk running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere.
  • Enjoy local produce: Enjoy the local produce from farmers’ markets along the way. Busselton and Margaret River have fantastic markets with fresh, tasty snacks. This not only supports local farmers but also makes your trip more delicious. Everybody loves road trip snacks!
  • Plan your visits to popular spots: Popular spots like Cape Le Grand National Park and Wave Rock can get busy, especially in summer. Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy a peaceful experience.
  • Stay connected with offline maps: Mobile reception can be patchy, especially in remote areas. Mobile reception can be spotty, especially in remote areas. Download maps and travel guides for offline use with apps like Maps.me.
  • Verify opening hours: Check opening hours for attractions, restaurants, and wineries before you go. Many places have seasonal hours or require bookings. A quick call or a check online can save you a lot of hassle.
  • Prepare for varying road conditions: Road conditions can vary widely throughout your trip. Main highways are usually well-maintained, but side roads to natural attractions can be rough or unsealed.
