The Top Five Reasons to Travel to Thailand

Whether you love a city break or want to escape the city, Thailand has got you covered.

  1. Thailand’s Culture is Everywhere

Thailand’s modern culture is a mix of thousands of years of history, religion and tradition, every visitor will experience something unique. Walking the streets you’ll likely see robed monks and saffron clad Buddhas. Cultural Wats and temples are everywhere and in many cities. There’s a hint of influence from near and far but it’s the local traditions that make Thailand special. Above all you’ll be charmed by the friendly and kind people and local communities that make you feel welcome. Cultural experiences like eating with local families and visiting historic temples are must do activities that get you immersed in the traditions and heritage of Thailand.

Most visitors start their journey in Bangkok and it’s no wonder, the magnificent Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace are the symbols of the country’s royal heritage. For a deeper dive into history go beyond the capital and visit the ancient city of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site or the beautiful Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) in Chiang Rai, which is a modern take on traditional Thai architecture.

Timing your visit during Songkran ( (Thai New Year) and you can join the world’s biggest water fight. This festival brings the whole country together in a fun and crazy atmosphere. We celebrated Songkran in Koh Samui and it was amazing! It was our first time experiencing this festival and we couldn’t have picked a better place to get into the action. From 8am to sunset we were out on the streets, soaking wet from head to toe, joining in water fights, laughing, dancing and partying with locals and tourists. The streets were packed and there was water everywhere! The sense of community and pure happiness made it an unforgettable experience. We would do it again in a heartbeat!

In November you can join the Loy Krathong festival where thousands of lanterns light up the night sky and handmade floating baskets are released into rivers, it’s a magical sight. This festival is a great way to experience Thai culture and tradition as locals gather to pay respects to the water goddess and wish for good fortune in the coming year.

The market culture is also amazing. In cities you’ll find dozens of markets from small local markets to Bangkok’s Chatuchak Weekend Market (the world’s largest). Here you’ll find everything from street food to Thai fisherman’s pants. It’s a great place to meet fellow foreigners and locals and to find unique gifts for friends and family back home. Eating with a local family and experiencing authentic Thai cuisine and culture is another way to connect with the local community.

  1. Thailand’s Natural Beauty and Outdoor Adventures are Unbeatable

Thailand’s natural beauty is stunning. The southern region has some of the world’s best beaches and islands. Visit the Krabi region or the Phi Phi Islands for crystal clear waters and amazing marine life. Koh Tao is a snorkeler and diver’s paradise while Koh Lanta is a more laid back beach experience.

Nature lovers should head to the lush rainforests of Khao Sok National Park, for diverse wildlife and dramatic limestone cliffs. Ethical elephant sanctuaries like lephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai where you can interact responsibly with Thailand’s gentle giants. For hikers Doi Inthanon National Park has challenging trails and the highest peak in Thailand.

Don’t miss Erawan Waterfalls in Kanchanaburi, where seven tiers of waterfalls create a peaceful haven. Phang Nga Bay is famous for its towering limestone karsts and emerald green waters, perfect for kayaking and exploring. If you want to unplug or go off-grid and experience a lot of natural wonders, Thailand is your dream destination.

  1. Food is everywhere

Thailand is a foodie’s heaven, with street food culture like no other. Influences come from everywhere, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, India, Malaysia and Indonesia in every mouthful.

Try must try dishes like Pad Thai, Som Tum (papaya salad) and Mango Sticky Rice. The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, Chillva Market Phuket, and Bangkok’s Chinatown have so many flavours and aromas to tempt you.

We joined a midnight tuk tuk tour that took us through the streets of Chinatown in Bangkok. One of the highlights of the night was dining at a 6 star Michelin restaurant where we tasted some of the best of Thai cuisine. Later we stopped at a traditional restaurant to try the best Mango Sticky Rice I’ve ever had. The combination of sweet mango, warm sticky rice and coconut milk was divine. The whole experience was amazing, you can see a short video of our food adventure [here] (insert video link).

If you’re in Bangkok and want to try many dishes, this kind of tour is a great way to experience the city’s food scene. Another way to try Thai food is to visit floating markets like Damnoen Saduakwhere vendors sell fresh produce and snacks from their boats. Both are ways to eat like nowhere else. But the sheer number of options available to you on every corner is reason enough to come to Thailand and just eat.

  1. Thailand is the Perfect Place for Rest, Rejuvenation, and Relaxation

Thailand is a global leader in wellness and relaxation, with world class spas, yoga retreats and wellness centers to suit every need. Treat yourself to a luxurious spa experience in Bangkok (oft Thai, Opium Spa, Suvarnaveda Spa)) or Phuket (AAmanpuri, Mala Spa, Asaya)) where traditional Thai massages and holistic treatments will rejuvenate your body and mind.

For those seeking peace, yoga and meditation retreats are scattered across Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. These retreats and classes are the perfect escape from the chaos of daily life. Many offer mindfulness and wellness programs to refresh and revitalize.

After a crazy few days in Phuket we went to Koh Lanta to chill out. We stayed at the Long Beach Chalets and it was heaven. Our room had a pool view and we spent our days lounging by the pool and taking long walks on the beach. As the sun went down and painted the sky pink and orange I felt completely relaxed – like I’d found my own little slice of heaven.

There are also natural springs with therapeutic properties. Try nature’s healing powers by soaking in the hot springs of Pai, Pak Tho, Kanchanaburi, and many other places around the country.

  1. Thailand has Experiences Off the Beaten Track

The Thai countryside is just as exciting as any of its famous cities. With tropical landscapes and its revered elephant population there’s plenty to see and do. Explore the rural areas by looking for community-based tourism opportunities to get a deeper connection with Thai culture and people. Look for tours that offer homestays with local families in the hill tribe villages of Northern Thailand or farm stays in small Thai towns. The experience of learning about unique community traditions and getting a glimpse into the local Thai way of life is priceless.

You can even travel more sustainably by choosing eco-lodges or supporting community projects. Sustainable travel options are plenty in the country and ecotourism initiatives benefit local communities.

Adrenaline junkies can try rock climbing in Railay Beach (Karst, Krabi Rock Climbing), kite surfing in Hua Hin (Kie Boarding Asia, Kite Thailand) and white-water rafting in Satun These activities will get your heart racing in beautiful surroundings.

Get immersed in local culture by attending a Muay Thai match, a traditional Thai boxing event that showcases the country’s martial arts heritage. You can even learn the martial art itself in its birthplace. Learn traditional crafts like silk weaving and take home a piece of Thailand’s artistic heritage that you made yourself. When in Thailand it’s hard not to leave without appreciating the local craftsmanship and tradition. So get in the driver’s seat and get involved!

Planning Your Trip to Thailand

When to Go

Thailand is a year round destination but the best time to visit depends on the region and your preference. The cool and dry season from November to March is generally the best time to visit with temperatures ranging from 20-25°C (68-77°F). This is the perfect time to see the country’s many attractions from cities to beaches.

But if you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices consider visiting during the hot season from March to May. While the temperatures can get up to 40°C (104°F) it’s a great time to enjoy the beaches and islands. Just be prepared for the heat and drink plenty of water.

The rainy season from June to October can also be a good time to visit especially in the north. The landscapes are lush and green and the occasional rain showers are short lived. The southeast coast including popular destinations like Koh Samui is best visited from December to April when the weather is dry and sunny.

To make the most of your trip, research the best time to visit Thailand. The cool, dry season from November to February is ideal for most travellers, while the off-peak seasons offer fewer crowds and lower prices. Each region has its own weather patterns, so plan accordingly.

Visa Policy and Travel Requirements

Thailand has a visa exemption policy for citizens of certain countries including the US, UK and Australia which allows visitors to stay for up to 30 days without a visa. For longer stays a visa on arrival can be obtained at the airport for an additional 15 days. Ensure you have the necessary visa requirements and follow travel health tips. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity and proof of onward travel.

The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB) with an exchange rate of around 30-40 THB per USD. It’s a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases but credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger shops. ATMs are everywhere in the country.

When packing think of the local climate and customs. Lightweight and breathable clothing is a must for the hot and humid weather but remember to dress modestly when visiting temples and religious sites. Comfortable shoes are a must for city and nature exploring.

Thailand offers various transportation options, from budget-friendly buses and trains to convenient domestic flights, making it easy to explore the country. In the cities, tuk tuks are convenient options for short tips, and taxi apps like Grab ensure you can find a ride when you need one.

Thailand is also a relatively safe country, so it’s a great destination for solo travellers. Backpacking is common and getting around or finding last minute accommodations on-the-fly is super-convenient, even if you are on your own. Plus, the friendly, welcoming nature of Thai locals make is easy to get advice or ask for directions.

For budget-conscious travellers, Thailand offers many affordable accommodation options, from hostels and guesthouses to boutique hotels. Saving money while travelling in Thailand is easy with delicious street food, inexpensive public transport, a strong hostel culture, and free or low-cost attractions.
