Looking for a quick fix?
Here are the best WA weekend getaways from Perth that are guaranteed to recharge your batteries. Whether you’re a wine lover, a beach bum, or just someone craving a change of scenery, road trips in Western Australia are the perfect way to experience the diverse landscapes and experiences this state has to offer. From sipping wine in Margaret River to sandboarding in Lancelin, there’s something here for everyone.
Margaret River Region: Where Wine Meets Waves
Margaret River holds a special place in our hearts, and honestly, we’ve lost count of how many times we’ve been! It never gets old. Whether it’s the world-class wineries, the epic surf spots, or just the amazing local food, we absolutely love spending weekends here. And trust me, if you haven’t been yet, you’re in for a treat!

Where to Stay
Margaret River is brimming with accommodation options to suit every vibe. Personally, we’ve stayed at Margarets In Town Apartments, which is right in the centre of town, meaning everything is literally at your doorstep. If you want to be closer to the beach, though, Margarets Beach Resort in Gnarabup is the way to go. You’re just a short drive to Surfers Point, and you can grab your morning coffee at the White Elephant Beach Café, which is right on the sand (trust me, their coffee with an ocean view is unbeatable). And for something different, why not try a farm stay or an Airbnb? There’s plenty to choose from!
Wineries You Can’t Miss
Let’s be real—Margaret River is all about the wine! My go-to spot is always McHenry Hohnen and Amato Vino, two absolute gems tucked away in Witchcliffe, just 10 minutes out of town. They’re boutique, they’re intimate, and the wine? Chef’s kiss. And if you’re feeling adventurous, sign up for a wine tour! It’s the perfect way to sample the best wineries without having to worry about driving. Grab a glass, relax, and let the day unfold.

Outdoor Fun
There’s way more to Margaret River than just wine! You can hike the Cape to Cape Track, surf at Surfers Point, or explore the Boranup Forest. The Ngilgi and Jewel Caves are must-visit spots if you love natural wonders. Each time we visit, we find something new to fall in love with!

Swan Valley: A Foodie’s Dream Just 30 Minutes from Perth
Swan Valley is one of those places that never disappoints. It’s Perth’s perfect little escape that’s practically in our backyard, and it has something for everyone—from Margaret River Chocolate Factory (yes, chocolate lovers, rejoice!) and the Swan Valley Fudge Factory to Sub Zero Gelato, which, trust me, is worth every calorie.

Where to Stay
For a quick weekend escape, Swan Valley is packed with cozy options. You could splurge on a stay at The Sebel or keep it simple at Swan Valley Retreat, where relaxation is guaranteed with their luxe outdoor spas and spacious rooms. Either way, you’ll be well-rested and ready for a full day of exploring.
Don’t Miss the Breweries
If wine isn’t your thing, don’t worry—Swan Valley has a thriving craft beer scene too! Places like Feral Brewing and Mash Brewing are always a good time. For something more chilled, hit up The Henley Brook (“The Hen” to locals) for a pint in the sun or by the fireplace in winter. Plus, the vibe at Old Young’s Distillery is great if you fancy trying some locally crafted spirits. You’ll leave with a happy stomach and even happier taste buds.
Lancelin: Dunes, Sandboards, and Memories
Ah, Lancelin! This was one of the first adventures we had after arriving in Australia, and it holds a special place in our hearts. We spent hours sandboarding down the massive dunes, laughing so hard it hurt. Seriously, this place is so much fun! If you’re not into sandboarding, you can rent a quad bike and zoom across the dunes, or just kick back and take in the views. There are a couple of small bakeries and shops nearby for a quick lunch, and yes—there is a pub if you fancy a cold one after all that adrenaline.

Jurien Bay: Swimming with Sea Lions and Coastal Vibes
Looking for a laid-back beach escape with a bit of adventure? Jurien Bay is where it’s at. Swim with the playful Australian Sea Lions (they’re so friendly!) or just chill on the white-sand beaches. And if you’re into fresh seafood, you’re in the right place—pair your meal with a local wine, and you’ve got yourself the perfect evening.
Oh, and on the way there, you have to stop at the Pinnacles Desert. Personally, I wasn’t blown away (sorry, Pinnacles fans!), but it’s worth a quick stop if you’ve never seen it before. Just don’t make a whole trip around it.

Pemberton: Tall Trees and a Bit of Adventure
We’ve stayed in Pemberton a couple of times at the Pemberton Hotel—a super friendly and welcoming spot that always makes us feel at home. It’s such a peaceful town, surrounded by lush greenery and towering karri trees. If you’re in the area, definitely swing by the Gloucester Tree—it’s iconic! My husband Jamie attempted to climb it once, and let’s just say, it was a hilarious sight to see. The tree is 53 metres tall, so if you’re brave enough to climb it, the views are incredible! If you’re up for a bit of adventure, give it a go, but even if you stay on the ground, it’s still a sight to see.
For nature lovers, Pemberton is the gateway to some incredible hikes, including Beedelup Falls and Big Brook Dam. You can spend your days walking through the forest or relaxing by the water—this is the kind of place that lets you slow down and really soak up the natural beauty around you.
And the best part? It’s just under 4 hours from Perth, making it an easy weekend escape.

Gnomesville: A Quirky Stop That Never Gets Old
If you’ve got friends or family visiting from out of town, Gnomesville is one of those quirky little stops that’s fun to show off. Whenever we’re driving back from Margaret River, we love stopping to add a new cheeky gnome to the collection. With thousands of gnomes scattered around, it’s a fun (and funny) place to wander through and spot all the clever signs people have left. It’s always a good laugh and a fun way to break up the drive!
