Many people think that Perth is all sunshine and beach days, but, come winter, that’s actually pretty far from the truth. Believe it or not, it can rain for days at a time here! And let’s be honest, while the rain makes everything lush and green, it does put a bit of a damper on our beach plans.

Since so many of Perth’s tourist attractions are geared up for warm weather, you might find yourself scratching your head, wondering what on earth you can do when it’s pouring outside. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered – there are a surprising amount of fun indoor activities in Perth that are perfect for those grey, drizzly days.

Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, or just looking to keep the kids busy, join me as we dive into the best rainy day activities in Perth.

1. Aquarium of Western Australia

The Aquarium of Western Australia is a cool way to spend an afternoon, especially if you’re interested in what goes on under the sea or if you’re looking for Perth rainy day activities to do with your kids.

The aquarium is packed with local marine life from the coastline of WA, and the walkthrough underwater tunnel is the best part, giving you a shark-eye view into the tanks without the need to get wet. It’s ideal for anyone, but, like most aquariums, is most popular with families and kids. If you’re looking for a laid-back yet educational rainy day activity, this spot checks all the boxes!

2. Art Gallery of WA

If you find yourself in Perth on a rainy day with a couple of hours to spare, the Art Gallery of WA is worth a visit. Located right in the city centre, this is where you can check out some of the top local art and creative works, as well as select pieces from around the globe. There’s also plenty of indigenous aboriginal art to peruse here.

As well as the permanent collection, there’s a rotating roster of limited-time exhibitions, focusing on specific artists and art movements. What’s more, the gallery is free to enter (they just ask for a voluntary donation). It’s easy to navigate, and not too overwhelming, making it perfect for a quick, inspiring walk-through. Oh, and it’s all indoors, of course!

3. The Perth Mint

The Perth Mint is one of those places that might sound a bit dry, but ends up being pretty fascinating, especially when you get to see a live gold pour or check out the original gold nuggets stored there! Whether you’re into coin collecting or just looking for something interesting to do, this is easily one of the most unusual things to do in Perth on a rainy day.

Entry to the grounds and the bullion room is free, or you can join one of the paid tours around the full complex, which depart multiple times per day.

The Mint provides a glimpse into the Australian gold rush days in a way that’s both educational and a bit shiny. It’s also pretty fun to learn about something that’s a bit different to the usual museum topics.

4. Fremantle Prison

For a dose of history with a side of eerie, Fremantle Prison delivers. It also doesn’t hurt that this is one of the most famous landmarks in Perth!

This UNESCO World Heritage site towers over Fremantle and is one of the few intact convict prisons in the world. There are numerous guided tours you can take around the prison, depending on what angle of its history you’re most interested in. You can choose from day tours that focus on the prison’s history, tours of the creepy labyrinth of underground tunnels underneath the prison or, if you’re feeling brave, a spooky torchlight tour at night.

Bizarrely, there’s also a YHA hostel inside the prison, in the former women’s block, so you’ll find a bunch of backpackers and budget travellers hanging out on the prison grounds. I’ve actually stayed there before, and it’s surprisingly comfortable, and not as spooky as it sounds.

5. Cockburn Ice Arena

For a fun way to cool down during summer, or escape the rain in winter, look no further Cockburn Ice Arena, one of the top indoor activities in Perth. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or just lacing up for the first time, this ice arena offers a refreshing break from the usual sunny outdoor activities around Perth.

It’s a great place for families or groups of friends who want to enjoy a bit of ice skating, try out some ice hockey, or even take a lesson or two. Their themed nights, including 2000’s night and Pool Party on Ice are always popular.

6. WA Shipwrecks Museum

Perched near the beach in Fremantle, the WA Shipwrecks Museum explores the fascinating maritime history of Western Australia, and is well worth a visit! The museum houses several galleries that showcase everything from the history of exploration off WA’s coastline to how shipwrecks can be safely recovered and preserved.

It’s a fascinating stop for anyone interested in the ocean’s role in WA’s history, and will only take you a couple of hours to explore. Don’t miss the retrieved original timbers from the 1629 wreck of the Batavia, which have been painstakingly pieced together to resemble the original hull of the ship!

I personally prefer the WA Maritime Museum, because it’s much larger and also more interactive, but this small museum is still a solid choice with free entry – they only ask for a donation.

7. WA Museum Boola Bardip

Boola Bardip, which means “many stories” in the local Noongar language, lives up to its name. This museum in central Perth is basically a crash course on all things WA history, all shown off through fabulous exhibits. It’s a place where you can spend several hours and still feel like there’s more to see, from prehistoric dinosaur displays to WA’s contemporary social issues.

This museum is perfect for anyone with a curious streak, whether you’re wrangling kids who love dinosaurs or you’re a history buff keen on digging deeper into local culture.

8. Scitech

Scitech in Perth is a hands-on science museum where the exhibits invite you to touch, play, and learn.  That’s why it’s one of my favourite recommendations for what to do in Perth when it rains.

There’s something really satisfying about interacting directly with the experiments, like programming a robot or watching a whirlpool form right before your eyes. It’s not just about observing; it’s about doing, which is what makes the learning stick. The planetarium is a highlight. Sitting back under the dome, you’re transported into space with stars and galaxies projected all around you. It’s super immersive and a little bit magical!

Whether you’re testing theories in the CSIRO Lab or exploring the principles of physics in action, Scitech makes science accessible and fun. It’s a spot where you can easily spend a few hours and come out smarter for it.

9. The Nostalgia Box

Ever wondered where all those video game consoles from the ’80s and ’90s ended up? Many of them have found a home at The Nostalgia Box in Perth. This museum is a retro gamer’s dream, packed with consoles from the dawn of gaming right up to the modern era. You’re not just limited to looking at them behind glass either – you get to play them. Yes, really!

As well as playing all of the games, you’re also able to follow along on the journey of video gaming technology, from the humble beginnings to the impressive graphics we have now. The museum does a great job of telling the story behind each piece in its collection. It’s a great spot for a unique date or a nostalgic outing with friends, making it one of the top fun indoor activities for adults in Perth.
